Chris Romulo grew up in a broken home. His mother Lucita, a Filipino immigrant, wanted Chris to go to college and live the American Dream. His father Carlito, also a Filipino immigrant, detached himself from the family and turned to gambling. After a series of unfortunate events in grammar school, Chris took to the streets of Queens, New York, where at twenty years old a near-death street fight redirected his life and purpose. Chris then set off on a twenty-year journey through the study of Muay Thai, which took him from New York City to Bangkok, Thailand and back again. As a fighter, Chris went on to become the first professional North American Super-Middleweight Muay Thai Champion in 2010. But after retiring, Chris was forced to make one more comeback when Hurricane Sandy destroyed his home and gym in 2012.

Chris Romulo’s personal journey captivates the reader as you watch him struggle as a young man on the streets to become a successful and respected fighter with a steadfast mindset to guide his choices. His is a story of uprising against life’s greatest challenges, but also a realistic, moving tale of his journey through fatherhood. On one hand, trying so hard to connect with his own father, and on the other, trying to be the father he never had.

For two decades Chris Romulo kept these stories buried inside. Now he opens up like never before. A retired fighter and Muay Thai champion, Chris Romulo runs CROM Physical Culture in Rockaway Beach, NY where he lives with his wife, Sarah, and two sons, Jube and Giovanni.

As many of the other reviews have said, few fighter memoirs are without a story of a hardscrabble upbringing. Younger readers can consume those come-from-behind stories without tiring of them, but others will look for more nuance. And just as Muay Thai is more nuanced than it seems, so is Chris' story of redemption. He unabashedly brings you into his world of emotion, sharing with you the fears and regrets that we all have, the ways he used to deal with them versus how he does now, how he keeps some of them from becoming his proverbial White Whale. There's a lot to be learned in this fast-paced read.

The book is more Sugar than The Natural, two great movies in their own rights. Without spoiling, the emotional end to the former movie has caused much self-reflection in the viewer. "Why am I here?" is a question it asks, as does Champions Uprising.

Champions Uprising Fall 7 Times Stand Up 8 Chris Romulo Anthony Melchiorri John Wolcott 9781546469834 Books Reviews

When I met Chris, I knew he was tough. But after reading this book, I had no idea. Chris's story shows how to come back when life (or someone's fist) knocks you down. He fought, scratched, clawed and battled his way through so many obstacles in this book...I was in awe.

The storytelling is masterful and makes for a very easy and addictive read. I couldn't put my kindle down. Each story sucks you in as Chris gives a painstaking attention to detail, crafting the perfect picture in your mind for each chapter.

This book will inspire you do more, be more, and strive for more. Because that's Chris's story.
The ancient Greeks believed in fate, moira, even blind fate, ananke. When the Delphic oracle told Laius that he would have a son who would kill him, he took every precaution to make sure it did not happen. Despite Laius taking every act to avoid that which had been predicated, everything the oracle foresaw happened, and every act designed to avoid it actually helped bring it about. Once the oracle had spoken and fate has been sealed, all attempts to avoid it are in vain. This cluster of ideas lies at the heart of one of the great Greek contributions to civilization tragedy. The ancient Greeks never met Chis Romulo a/k/a Mr. Classic.

I read this book and could not put it down, finishing it within a span of a few days. Chris takes us through his fascinating lief journey and makes it our own. From his rough and tumble beginnings, to his path as a world class Muay Thai fighter, the pages of this book speak to all of us who have, and seek to, overcome life’s myriad punches. We not only learn what it takes to become an elite world class fighter and get an insight to the warrior training inherent therein, but get to watch a beautiful love blossom from within the depth of a grimy gym basement. Chris valiantly shares his own family disfunctions so that in the process we can all take away what it means to become a true parent. Chris does not hide his manifold mistakes and life’s takedowns, but one reads and learns what it takes to capture the glory of raising a fist in the air for victory.

If one is looking for action and entertainment, rare would one find a book that grips one at every page with stories of real life human lions facing each other in a ring. If one is looking for inspiration, rare would one find a book that speaks to a person within so many facets and leaves one with such hope. If one is looking for a book that can literally change a life, Chris shows us that whereas a tragedy is a drama with a sad outcome with a protagonist destined to experience a downfall, we are free to create our own destiny, that we all make mistakes, but we have within us the fortitude to learn, change, and grow.

As I closed this book, Chris helped me come to the realization that the future is not written. There is no fate we cannot change, no prediction we cannot defy. Chris made his own future, by his own choices, his own willpower, his own persistence, and his determination to survive and champ up. Read this book and I promise you that you will be inspired to make Chris’ story your own, and champ up!

Rare is it that a book entertains, captivates, and is capable of changing one’s life; Champ Up is such a book. It should be on everyone’s shelf and its message will no doubt resonate in the reader’s heart and soul!
Fighters tend to go through life telling themselves and anyone that will listen that they are the greatest. They hide there flaws from there opponents so they won't expose a weakness or vulnerability in there game. One of the many reasons I love this book is because that isn't the case here. Chris actually does the opposite. He brings you along as he relives his life's journey pointing out weaknesses and flaws and highlights some of the things he did to work through. I am grateful he got beat up that day walking past that bus, because my own journey got to cross paths with his as a result. I am part of this story, from the first time i walked on those green ju-jitsu mats in that shared space, to pounding out the walls to expose those bricks in there first solo spot. I remember all the miles we ran on the sand as he trained for Sean hinds and that day they first allowed us back into rockaway to see what sandy left us. Please know everything in this book is truth and as real as real can be. At the end of the book he points to losing some members after the storm and having to rebuild again. I was one of them. But crom will ALWAYS be apart of my life. Not just because church street is now my new gym home, his original stomping grounds. But because of the life lessons i learned. Besides an over hand right chris's biggest lesson he taught was be real to the lifestyle. Be commited to the grind. regardless of what your grind is, approach it with all you got, stay commited to working till you achieved what you set to and if you fall, get up, chin down, hands up and keep moving forward. He would say, "you dont have to be a fighter to train like one", this book reminds us not all fights happen in a ring but the winning formula is still the same
